The winners of the 2022 Woolworths Queensland Junior Titles Event Two were crowned today on Sunday 19 June and the Queensland State Junior Champions, in windy and challenging 2 – 3 ft shore breaks at Coolum Beach.
Today concluded the four event series of the 2022 Woolworths Queensland Grommet and Junior Titles series.
The morning saw the best of the conditions before the strong southerly wind came up and the conditions deteriorated for the juniors to battle for a State Title and a position at the 2022 Australian Junior Surfing Titles, which will be held at North Stradbroke later this year.
The Under 16 Girls was a seesaw battle for first between Jordy Halford (Currumbin Waters) and Stella Green (Buddina). Halford ended up taking the top spot ahead of Stella Green, Isla Huppitz (Burleigh Heads) and Oli Taylor (Peregian Beach)
“I had so much fun out there, the girls are all surfing so good; it’s such a tough field” said Halford. “I’m super stoked to win today and also the overall Queensland Under 16 Girls Title. Bring on Aussies!”
The Under 16 Boys Division was taken out by Zyah Hession (Coolangatta) who was a standout performer of the weekend. Hession defeated, Scott Arderne (Tugun), Mitchell Peterson (Noosa Heads), and Landen Smales (Noosa Heads).
“Stoked the waves glassed off for the final,” said Hession. “It was heaps of fun surfing the final with my good mates and I’m excited to head over to the Australian Titles later this year.”
The Under 18 Girls Division was another tough matchup. Jahly Stokes (Buddina) defended her Event One win and claimed the overall Queensland Under 18 Girls Title ahead of Coco Cairns (Tewantin), Tayla Green (Buddina) and Layla Oheir (Alexandra Headland).
“This is the first time I’ve ever gone back-to-back with wins and it feel’s really good,” said Stokes. “I’m really happy with how I surfed. This is my first year in the Under 18 Girls division so I’m stoked to take it out.”
The Under 18 boys were on fire all weekend. Ty Richardson (Palm Beach) had a slow start to the final but managed to score two good waves and come back and defend his win and claim the overall Queensland Title.
Richardson defeated Tom Whitpaine (Burleigh Heads), Braxon Holmstrom (Buddina) and Harry Martin (Palm Beach) in the Under 18 Boys final.
“It feels good to go back-to-back and claim the overall win,” said Richardson. “I didn’t put too much pressure on myself for the final. I just wanted to stay calm, surf my best and I feel like I did that today.”
The results of Event One and Event Two were combined together to decide the Queensland champions for each division.
