SUNSHINE COAST, QUEENSLAND (Saturday 10 December 2022) – Groms of all ages hit the waves today at Coolum Beach on the Sunshine Coast for the final stop of the Woolworths Surfer Groms Comp nationwide series presented by Ruffie. The wind affected 2-3ft waves proved no obstacle for the young surfers.
Attracting almost 80 junior surfers, Event Ten of the Woolworths Surfer Groms series saw fun and friendly surfing action from the under 8 Parent-Assist division all the way to the under 14 Boys and Girls divisions.
Standout performance of the day went to Thomas Bourke (Tugun), in the Under 10 Boys (optional parent assist) division, using his power to secure the highest two-wave total of the day (15.67 out of a possible 20).
Under 12 Boys top ranked surfer, Zac Johnston (Currimundi), launched his campaign with a bang, putting on an excellent display of surfing and securing the highest total of the division (14.34 out of a possible 20.00).
Kanon Takahashi (Palm Beach),used her mature backhand attack to slice her way through to the Quarterfinals in theUnder 14 Girls division.
Standout performers in the U14 Boys division included Jesse Fergusson (Sunshine Beach), Lucas Leal (Dee Why), Lachlan Arghyros (Kingscliff), and Hayden Danswan (Peregian Springs), taking out their respective heats and making us excited for tomorrow’s final day of action.

Finals day will be commencing at 7:30am tomorrow with Coolum Beach deemed the likely venue, however competitors and parents are encouraged to call the Surfing Queensland event hotline after 6am for confirmation.

About the Woolworths Surfer Groms Comp Series
Regarded as one of the major stepping stones in the development of young Australian surfers, the 10-event Woolworths Surfer Groms Comps series caters for surfers from Under 8 to Under 14 and will be held in New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, Western Australia, Tasmania and South Australia over summer.
As an added bonus, the respective winners of the Under 14 boys’ and girls’ divisions from each event will receive an invite to attend an all-expenses-paid, three-day Woolworths Surfer Groms Comps National Final Surf Camp, (1-day coaching clinic, two days of competition and heat analysis coaching) at the Surfing Australia High-Performance Centre (HPC). For the South Australian, Victorian and Tasmanian events, the Woolworths Surf Camp prize will be awarded to the highest place Under-14 Boy and Girl who reside in that respective state
