SUNSHINE COAST, QUEENSLAND (Saturday 27 May, 2023) – Queensland’s best up-and-coming surfers hit the waves today at one-to-two foot Coolum Beach, Sunshine Coast for event one of the 2023 Woolworths Queensland Grommet Titles.
It was the top seeds who took the reins today, putting on solid performances, posting excellent scores and progressing through to tomorrow’s finals.
Under 14 boys top seed and previous Under 12 Queensland State Champion, Zac Johnston (Currimundi), was in fine form, kicking off his Queensland Title campaign with a bang.
Johnston said it was a good confidence boost to start the event with a strong performance and is hoping to qualify for the Australian Titles later this year.
“The State Titles are always so much fun,” said Johnston. “It’s always great catching up with friends and I’m really hoping to qualify for the Australian Titles at Phillip Island this year. I’ve never surfed down there but it looks like there are so many fun waves so it’s a good incentive.”
Under 14 girls top seed and 2022 Under 14 Girls Australian Junior Champion, Eliza Richardson (Sunshine Beach),put on a stellar performance and scored the highest heat total of the day (14.83 out of a possible 20).
Standout performers in the U12 Boys division included Jaxxon Sands (Palm Beach), Tully Crompton (Tugun) and Brandon Davidson (Coolangatta), taking out their respective quarterfinals and advancing through to tomorrow’s finals.

Finals day will likely be commencing at 7:30am tomorrow with Coolum Beach deemed the likely venue, however competitors and parents are encouraged to call the Surfing Queensland event hotline (07 3030 6388) after 6am for confirmation.
