GOLD COAST, QUEENSLAND (Sunday 23 June 2024) – The winners of the 2024 Queensland Grommet Titles Event Two and overall Queensland Champions were decided today in clean two-foot waves at Duranbah Beach.
It was a classic Queensland winter day with offshore winds and plenty of waves for the groms to battle it out for a State Title and a position in the 2024 Australian Junior Surfing Titles which will be held at Wollongong, NSW, on Nov 24 – Dec 1, 2024.
The Under 12 Girls final was a testament to the impressive young Queensland talent, which saw Evie Johnston (Marcus Beach) claim victory in the final and the prestigious title of Queensland Champion.
It was a battle of the Gold Coast locals, ending with Morrison Massey (Palm Beach) being crowned Queensland Champion in the Under 12 Boys division after placing second in today’s final against Thomas Bourke (Tugun). Combining the points of both Event One and Event Two, it was Massey who came out on top.
It was Navah Holmes (Tugun) who won both the Under 14 Girls Final and overall Queensland Champion, going back-to-back after winning last year’s Queensland Title in the Under 12’s. She will be joining the Queensland State Team, who are aiming to get their third consecutive win at the Australian Junior Titles in Wollongong.
“It feels great to get my second Queensland Title and I can’t wait to compete with my friends at the Aussie Titles,” said Holmes.
“This will be my first time going to the Aussie Titles, so I am grateful to hopefully help the Queensland team get their third win in a row!”
The Under 14 boys were on fire all weekend with Luca Martin (Coolangatta) being the standout from day one. Martin managed to find an excellent set wave in the backend of the heat, securing a near perfect score of 9.33 (out of a possible 10 points).
“I am so stoked with that high score in the finals, it definitely boosted my confidence out there surfing in such a stacked heat,” said Martin.
“I can’t wait to surf at the Aussies! Our team is really solid, so we are feeling good about getting that third victory. Thank you Surfing Queensland for putting on this event and for the providing Surfing Queensland Academy scholarship.
Queensland Champions in the U14’s received a Surfing Queensland Academy scholarship.
The 5-month program consists of a 2-night camp at the Surfing Australia High-Performance Centre, multiple online sessions with professionals/specialists and an exclusive athlete’s pack.
The results of Event One and Event Two were combined together to decide the Queensland Champions for each division.
Tomorrow will see the Juniors take to the water for Day One of the Queensland Junior Surfing Titles Event Two.
