A Masterclass at Alexandra Bluff on Day Five of the 2023 Queensland Surf Championships

Published on 21/04/2023

It was a masterclass of surfing today at Alexandra Bluff, as the Master’s Shortboard Titles took to the waves to compete for the highly coveted Queensland Title and a chance to compete at the Australian Titles.

Alexandra Bluff again provided the perfect playground for the seasoned surfers, with three-to-four foot long right-hand walls on offer for the Over 35 surfers to showcase their mastery of the sport.

The Masters shortboard divisions were fiercely contested, with competitors showcasing their determination to take home the prestigious Queensland Title and secure a position at the Australian Titles.

Ryan Campbell was the standout of the Masters Shortboard division, taking out the Mens Over 35 Shortboard over Murray Scott, Brent Symes and Trevor Tripcony, respectively.

Campbell said he was stoked to take the win today, especially after being out of the water due to a knee injury.

“I haven’t been surfing that much because I hurt my knee,” said Campbell. “I had low expectations coming into this event, so I’m really happy to get back in the water and especially win today. We’ve all been surfing against each other since we were 13. It’s always a good event to catch-up with your mates.”

Another strong performer and standout of the day was 2022 Women’s Over 35 Australian Champion, Lauren Poor, taking out the Women’s Over 35 division. Poor defeated Nathalie Rennie.

“I’m super stoked to win today and amped to get some decent waves on the point,” said Poor. “Looking forward to the Australian Titles later this year and hopefully I’ll be able to defend my title.”

Tomorrow will be the final day of competition with the blue-ribbon Open Men’s and Women’s shortboard divisions set to wrap up the 2023 Queensland Surf Championships.
