Cooee Grommet Pro Finals Day Wraps Up at Coolum Beach

Published on 14/12/2023

SUNSHINE COAST, QUEENSLAND (Wednesday 13 December 2023) – Groms strived for victory on finals day at Coolum Beach for the Cooee Grommet Pro. The inaugural event showcased textbook surfing across the various divisions, with competitors giving it their all in the final Surfing Queensland event of the year. The fun and forgiving 3ft conditions, allowed the 128 junior surfers to demonstrate their technical and competitive abilities.

At just 9 years old, Jaya Suhendra started the day winning the Under 12 Boys semifinal after already progressing to the finals in the Under 10 Boys. He then went on to win the Under 10’s, with his best wave scoring an incredible 9.33 (out of a possible 10). With this momentum, Jaya won the Under 12 Boys final, finishing his competitive year strong.

Jaya Suhendra commented on how enjoyable the event was and thanked his parents for all their support.

“Thank you Surfing Queensland and Cooee for putting on a really fun event! I want to thank my parents and sponsors and I am stoked to walk away with two division wins,” said Suhendra.

To finish his speech he let out a loud, “COOEE!” which was met with laughter and applause from the groms and parents.

In the Under 8 Boys and Girls Mixed Division, Austin Reynolds claimed victory after demonstrating exceptional talent over the last three days. He held a confident lead throughout and finished the final with a total of 17.90 (out of a possible 20), the highest heat total of the day.

Under 14 Girls top seed sisters, Eliza Richardson and Rosie Richardson, put on impressive performances, with Eliza finishing in first and Rosie placing second.

Meika Locke maintained dominance in the Under 16 Girls final against stacked competition and took the win with Kauri Heuston-Connor taking the runner-up spot.

To finish the event, Jai Nield narrowly got the win against top seed Hayden Danswan, with the Under 16 Boys making the most out of the afternoon’s smaller conditions.

Each division winner walked away with two free sessions at URBNSURF, making for an excellent training opportunity for the victorious groms.

Aside from the action-packed surfing, the event featured a multitude of exciting beach games, where kids won a variety of Cooee toys and products.

The Cooee Grommet Pro served as the perfect finish to the 2023 Surfing Queensland calendar, mixing exciting beach games with exceptional surfing.
