GROMS GO WILD: DAY ONE OF THE OCEANSIDE GROMQUEST

Published on 18/03/2023

MIAMI BEACH, QUEENSLAND (18 March, 2023) – Miami Beach came alive today as more than 100 groms from far and wide descended on the Gold Coast for the inaugural Oceanside GromQuest. The small waves and wind affected conditions proved no obstacle for the young surfers who were excited to be involved with the fun and friendly competition.

The opening day of competition saw an array of male and female surfers, from Under 10 parent-assist divisions all the way to the Under 16 boys and girls divisions.

Under 12 Boys top ranked surfer, Jaxxon Sands, launched his campaign with a bang, putting on an excellent display of surfing and securing the highest total of the division (14.83 out of a possible 20.00).

Standout performers in the U14 Boys division included Cooper RiellyLucas DeffentiZac Johnston and Luca Martin, taking out their respective heats and making us excited for tomorrow’s final day of action.

Current Under 14 Australian Champion, Eliza Richardson, said she was stoked to win her first heat and put the competition rashvest back on in Queensland.

“The conditions were tough but it’s still so much fun getting out there and competing with your friends,” said Richardson. “It’s going to be a really fun weekend and I can’t wait for tomorrow!”

The blue-ribbon Under 16 division hit the water in the afternoon and had their eyes on the prize – an Oceanside Electric Bike.

One of the standouts of the boys division was Aidan Finn, piecing together some critical manoeuvres to progress through to tomorrow’s final.

“My mate has an Oceanside e-bike and it goes sick,” said Finn. “I’d be pretty stoked to win one. It’s awesome being here with all of my mates from all over. I’m looking forward to tomorrow, the waves are meant to improve, so I’ll be down here early for another long day in the sun.”
