Gold Coast, Queensland (Saturday, 21st November 2020) – The stage is set for an exciting finals day at the Gold Coast leg of the 2020 Woolworths Surfer Grom Comps series after an action-packed opening day with incredible surfing displayed across all seven divisions.
Southport Spit was the location of choice – providing clean 2-3ft waves for the 85 grommet competitors. Tomorrow will see champions crowned in seven separate divisions, as well as speciality awards being handed out.
Day one standouts in the boys divisions included Max McGillivray (Evans Head, NSW) who posted the highest single wave score of the day with a 9.17, Caden Francis (Palm Beach), Lachlan Arghyros (Kingscliff, NSW), and Hunter Andersson (Moffat Beach) with all surfers boasting heat totals greater than 13 points on their road to finals day.
Lucas Deffenti (Miami) was also able to post back to back heat totals greater than 13 points in two separate divisions; an incredible feat for the Burleigh Heads rising star.
“The waves were really fun today! It was 2 foot and clean and I’m excited to be surfing in both the Under 12 & Under 10 boys divisions. Tomorrow will be really fun.”
Ava Arghyros (Kingscliff) and Jordy Halford (Currumbin) had an epic battle in round one of the under 14 girls with Ava and Jordy scoring 13.83 and 12.84 respectively while booking their ticket to finals day meanwhile Charlie Hately (Currumbin) posted a 15.74 heat total in the repechage to also progress to finals day.
“I was just trying to keep busy catching waves and put a lot of oomph into my turns! It will be really fun surfing against all of the girls again tomorrow” said Arghyros.
Other top performances of the day in the girls include Navah Holmes (Burleigh Heads), Pipi Taylor (Peregian Beach) and Kauri Heuston-Connor (Burleigh Heads).
Finals day will be kicking off at 7:30am with the Southport Spit being deemed the likely venue with competitors encouraged to call the Surfing Queensland events hotline on 07 3030 6388 to confirm the official venue and schedule from 6am.
