Junior Surfing Stars Set To Light Up The Gold Coast As The Woolworths Surfer Groms Comp Kicks Off Tomorrow

Gold Coast, Queensland (Friday, 20th November, 2020) The stage has been set for Queensland’s best junior surfers who will begin their Woolworths Surfer Groms Comps campaign with the event kicking off tomorrow at 7.30am on the Gold Coast.

The full heat draw and schedule is now available and you can stay up to date with all of the action on Live Heats and the Surfing Queensland Instagram.

The Southport Spit is the likely location with athletes encouraged to call the event hotline on (07 3030 6388) each morning for venue confirmation.

Attracting over 80 frothing grommets, event nine of the Woolworths Surfer Groms series will see fun and friendly surfing action from under 8 parent assist all the way through to the under 14 boys and girls divisions.

With 2-3 feet of easterly swell and light winds predicted, this weekend is shaping up to be an awesome playground for Queensland’s best junior surfers.

Headlining the Under 14 boys division, Rico Haybittle (Burleigh Heads) and Landen Smales (Peregian Beach) will go head to head after finishing first and second respectively in the 2020 Queensland Titles.

“I had so much fun competing against Rico at the QLD Titles and we really pushed each other. He beat me on a count-back after the two events so I am really excited to get to compete against him again as well as all of the other awesome surfers.”

Under 14 QLD Champion Jordy Halford (Currumbin) is in great form after placing second in the MNM Critter Comp on Saturday.

“I was stoked to get second at the MNM Critter Comp on the weekend and I really enjoyed surfing against the older girls. I am looking forward to surfing again this weekend, the Woolworths Surfer Grom Comps are always so much fun.”

Other exciting match ups to keep an eye on include the under 12 male duo of Hunter Andersson (Moffat Beach) and Lucas Deffenti (Miami) who both surf well beyond their years while the under 12 girls will feature the QLD podium of Laney Stokes (Buddina)Pipi Taylor (Peregian Beach),  Kauri Hewston Connor (Burleigh Heads) and Roxanne Cameron (Burleigh Heads).

About the 2020 Woolworths Surfer Grom Comp Series:

The Woolworths Surfer Groms Comps cater for the mini, micro groms (U/8) to the big kids alike (U/14) of any level, and is all about providing a fun, but competitive environment. 

In 2020 the national series consists of ten events which will hit the shores of every State and will once again deliver a fun and friendly introduction to surf competition.

Each entrant will receive a YETI event item for entering. 

As an added bonus, the respective winners of the Under 14 boys’ and girls’ divisions from each event will receive an invite to attend an all-expenses-paid, three-day Woolworths Surfer Groms Comps National Final Surf Camp, (1-day coaching clinic, 2 days of competition and heat analysis coaching) at the Surfing Australia High-Performance Centre (HPC).
