SUNSHINE COAST, QUEENSLAND (Sunday 28 March 2021) – The 2021 Volkswagen Queensland Surf Festival wrapped up today, finishing with classic logging in glassy, two-foot conditions at Coolum Beach.

In what seemed like a flash of déjà vu, both winners of yesterday’s Open Womens and Open Mens longboarding finals took out the same division in today’s logging.

Open Womens Logger winner, Emily Lethbridge, narrowly edged out another strong performance by Kirra Molnar who finished second.

Lethbridge said it was great to be competing and spending time with friends at the Festival.

“I got a few good waves in the final, but it was still pretty tricky. I couldn’t hear the scores very well and I saw the other girls get some good waves, so it was a little nerve-wracking.”

“All of us girls are friends, but I think secretly we all want to win. The fact we compete against each other so regularly probably adds to the competitiveness between us.”

“It’s so good to be back competing. The Festival has brought all of us together for a few good beach days. I want to thank Surfing Queensland for putting on such a great event.”

The Open Mens Final was won by Bowie Pollard with a score of 17.43, which included the highest wave score (9.60) of the entire nine-day event.

Pollard said he had been waiting for three days to get the wave that led to his high score.

“I’ve been waiting for one of those waves where I could stand on the nose. It had a really long wall so I just went for it and got that nice hang ten.”

“Surfing Queensland is doing an incredible job with the event. It’s getting better every year – the judging is great, the venues are good, and the waves have been exceptional. It’s been an epic Festival.”

Today’s finals bring an end to the 2021 Volkswagen Queensland Surf Festival. Surfing Queensland would like to thank event sponsors Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, The Point Coolum Beach, The Sunshine Coast Council, H2Coco, Surfing Life Magazine, Queensland Government, Coolum Business and Tourism, QMS Media and Visit Sunshine Coast.
