SUNSHINE COAST, QUEENSLAND (Monday, 25 May 2026) – Alex Bluff turned on for the Queensland State Championships today, with the Shortboard Masters and Kneeboard divisions treated to excellent conditions as a solid swell lit up the Sunshine Coast point break.
Usually known as a longboard wave, Alex Bluff provided the perfect canvas for Queensland’s best Masters competitors, with surfers across divisions ranging from Over 30 through to Over 65 putting on an impressive display of high-performance surfing.
The Finals action kicked off with the Shortboard Grand Dukes Men Over 60 division, where Surfing Queensland Life Member Terry ‘Tappa’ Teece claimed his first-ever Queensland Title. Teece overcame Terry Landsberg, David Masters and Brendon Hill in an emotional victory.
The Shortboard Dukes Men Over 55 final saw Paul Wayland deliver one of the standout performances of the morning, locking in a strong 7.50 (out of a possible 10) early in the heat to secure the win.
In the Shortboard Legends Men Over 65 division, Trevor Medcalf claimed victory ahead of Bruce Dunne and Wayne Stevens after a consistent performance in the clean point break conditions.
The Shortboard Grand Kahunas Men Over 50 delivered another exciting final, with Shannon Neil posting an excellent heat total of 16.07 (out of a possible 20) despite only catching two waves across the entire heat.
The Kneeboard Open division saw standout competitor Gary Slater rise to the top, making the most of the point break conditions to secure the Queensland Title.
Current Australian Champion Serena Brooke proved once again why she is one of the country’s premier Masters surfers, claiming victories in both the Shortboard Masters Women Over 30 and Shortboard Grand Masters Women Over 40 divisions.
The Shortboard Grand Masters Men Over 40 division saw Andrew Doyle claim the Queensland Title after overcoming Ben Scarlett, Murray Scott and Chris Brooke in a competitive final.
The championships concluded with one of the most thrilling heats of the entire event in the Shortboard Masters Men Over 30 division, where Jasper Endersby delivered an outstanding performance, earning a near-perfect 9.33 wave score to secure victory.
Queensland’s top Masters surfers will now turn their attention to the Australian Shortboard Titles, where they will battle it out against the country’s best later this year.
Tomorrow will see the Longboard and Stand-Up Paddle (SUP) divisions hit the water as the Queensland State Championships continue across the Sunshine Coast.
