Queensland Grommet Champions Crowned at Duranbah Beach

Published on 13/06/2022

The winners of the 2022 Woolworths Queensland Grommet Titles Event Two were crowned today as well as the Queensland State Grommet Champions, in clean 2 – 3ft waves at Duranbah Beach.

It was a classic Queensland winter day with light offshore wind and plenty of waves for the groms to battle it out for a state title and a position at the 2022 Australian Junior Surfing Titles.

In the Under 12 Girls final, Evie Wilson (Marcus Beach), fought hard for the win against Miller May Berg (Miami), Charlotte Rielly (Dicky Beach), Navah Holmes (Tugun).

“I had so much fun with the girls out there,” said Wilson. “I’m really happy with how I surfed today and stoked to take the win.”

The Under 12 Boys Division was taken out by Lucas Deffenti (Miami) (12.83) who was a standout performer of the weekend. Deffenti defeated, Archie Fergusson (Sunshine Beach), Zac Johnston (Currimundi), and Ky Clements (Coolum Beach).

“The waves were so good out there,” said Deffenti. “I’m so stoked to win, the other boys were ripping so I’m really happy with my performance.”

The Under 14 Girls Division was another tough matchup. Eliza Richardson (Sunshine Beach) ended up claiming the top spot ahead of Laney Stokes (Buddina), Meika Locke (Palm Beach) and Rosie Richardson (Sunshine Beach).

“It’s always super competitive when I surf against my sister, Rosie,” said Richardson. “It definitely fires us both up to surf better so I’m pretty stoked to take the top spot today. All the girls were ripping.”

The Under 14 boys were on fire all weekend. Jesse Fergusson (Sunshine Beach) had a slow start to the final but managed to score two excellent waves towards the end of the final to claim the win.

Fergusson also dropped the highest heat total of the weekend (16.67 out of a possible 20). He defeated Hunter Andersson (Moffat Beach), Henry Dowling (Sunrise Beach) and Kai Alcala (Hinterland Way).

“I had a slow start to the final but I decided to stay calm and just focus on picking the right waves,” said Fergusson. “I’m super stoked to take the win. The boys are all ripping so it was anyones today. It was a really tough event so I’m over the moon about my result.”

The results of Event One and Event Two were combined together to decide the Queensland champions for each division.

Full event results and series placings are listed below.

Surfing Queensland would like to thank its partners Woolworths, QMS Media, The Point Coolum Beach and Sunshine Coast Council.
