Remembering Surfing Queensland Life Member Tommy Peterson

Published on 18/02/2025

The surfing world is mourning the loss of Tommy Peterson, a beloved figure in the community.

In recognition of his exceptional contributions to the sport, Tommy Peterson was inducted as a Life Member of Surfing Queensland in 1987. His impact on the surfing community, from his innovative board designs to his unwavering support for Queensland competitors, made him a respected and influential figure.

From his early days as a young grommet at Kirra Surfriders alongside his older brother, the legendary Michael Peterson (MP), Tommy played a pivotal role in shaping surfing’s evolution.

While MP dominated in competition, Tommy left his mark in the shaping bay, gaining international recognition for his innovative board designs. His visionary approach was evident in the groundbreaking small wave step-bottom channel board he shaped for 3X World Champion Tom Curren during a Rip Curl Search trip to the Mentawais in the early ’90s.

A passionate advocate for Queensland surfers, Tommy was a vocal supporter of local talent on the national stage and served as Queensland’s team manager across various levels. Known for his manual craftsmanship and quick wit, he often spoke on behalf of his famously reserved brother, ensuring their shared passion for surfing was always heard.

Tommy Peterson’s contributions to the sport and unwavering support for the surfing community will be remembered for generations to come.

Rest in peace Tommy.
