SUNSHINE COAST, QUEENSLAND (Thursday, 29 May 2025) – The Queensland Surf Championships wrapped up today with an exciting final day of competition, showcasing the Longboard divisions. Held in ideal longboard conditions, the event took centre stage at Coolum Beach on the Sunshine Coast.
The competition was intense and exciting, with surfers from all over the state showcasing their skills at the three foot beach break. There were 13 divisions ranging from the Under 18 Juniors to the Over 70’s Legends.
At just 14 years of age, Luana Matthies delivered an outstanding performance, claiming both the Longboard Junior Women U18 title and the prestigious Longboard Open Women title.
Matthies’ exceptional longboard surfing skills saw her overcome Australian Longboard Champion, Kirra Molnar, who also represented Australia at the 2024 ISA World Longboard Championship in El Salvador.
“All the women in my heat are such amazing surfers and I had fun time out in the water,” said Matthies.
“I’m excited to compete at the Aussie Titles with our incredible team, and I believe we have a strong chance at bringing home the win!”
Luana’s 12-year-old brother, Hosea Matthies, also enjoyed remarkable success, taking out the Longboard Junior Men U18 title and securing an impressive third place finish in the prestigious Longboard Open Men division.
Clinton Guest emerged victorious in the Longboard Open Men division after an exciting final showdown against Longboard World Champion Josh Constable, Hosea Matthies, and Dylan Macleod. Delivering a standout performance, Guest’s best wave scored an impressive 8.27 (out of a possible 10) to seal the win.
“Everyone was ripping out there! JC (Josh Constable) came out strong, just like he always does, but I’m stoked I was able to bring it home in the end,” said Guest.
“I love the Aussie Titles. It is a platform I have been doing since I was Hosea’s age. We have so many amazing surfers here at this event and more importantly, amazing people and I am stoked to share my time with them.”
