GOLD COAST, QUEENSLAND (Wednesday 17 May, 2023) – Internationally renowned Billabong Occy’s Grom Comp is set to return 1 – 4 July, this year to be held at the world-class surf break, Snapper Rocks, Queensland. The event, now in its 18th year, has traditionally been held at Duranbah Beach.
Surfing Queensland CEO, Adam Yates, said it’s a fantastic decision to relocate the event to Snapper Rocks to further elevate the already prestigious event.
“The Occy’s grom comp is one of the most highly anticipated events on the junior calendar and recognised globally as one of the most prestigious grom surfing competitions” said Yates. “The event is a key pathway for Australia’s best juniors, with previous event champions including current Championship Tour surfers and former World Champions. Each year the calibre of surfing improves and is taken up a notch, so it’s only fitting to move the event to one of the best surf breaks in the world to cement its status as one of the top junior events.”
The event will play host to an array of Australian and International up-and-coming male and female surfers from Under 12 to the Blue Ribbon Under 16 divisions.
1999 World Champion Mark “Occy” Occhilupo, who the event is named after, is thrilled to see the Occy’s Grom Comp make the relocation to Snapper Rocks.
‘I’m beyond excited that the Billabong Occy Grom Comp will be running at Snapper Rocks in 2023,” said Occhilupo. “It’s been a dream of mine for a very long and I can’t believe it’s finally going to happen! Can’t wait to see all the top groms in Australia and overseas get a chance to surf a heat at one of the best waves in the world! Thanks to everyone involved in making this happen.”
