GOLD COAST, QUEENSLAND (Thursday 18 March 2021) – The 2021 Volkswagen Queensland Surf Festival is set to begin this weekend, kicking off nine days of surfing action at Coolum Beach between Saturday March 20 and Sunday March 28.
Local Coolum surfer Ellia Smith, 17, will be competing in the Open Women’s Shortboard division and is keen to be back surfing her local break.
“I’m really looking forward to be pulling on a rash shirt and surfing heats at home against some of Queensland’s best women competitors. I love the surfing community in Coolum and am looking forward to the Festival.”
The Volkswagen Queensland Surf Festival is the largest state surfing event in the country, combining surfing, longboarding, logging, bodyboarding and stand-up-paddle boarding. A total of 52 titles will be up for grabs as competitors vie for selection into the Queensland team to compete at the Australian Titles later in the year.
Surfing Queensland CEO, Adam Yates, said the action will provide plenty of entertainment for spectators, regardless of their surfing preference.
“The great thing about the 2021 Volkswagen Queensland Surf Festival is that it combines a range of surfing divisions all in the one event. It doesn’t matter whether you’re a surfer, bodyboarder, longboarder, stand-up-paddleboader or logger, it’s all taking place at Coolum.”
Ryan Davies, Director of Commercial Vehicles for Volkswagen Group Australia, said he’s particularly excited about showing off the latest range of VWs to the local surfing community.
“While classic Kombis will be lining the streets, there will also be some modern ones at Coolum too. Volkswagen will be displaying its new Multivan people mover and retro-inspired California camper van throughout the Festival.”
In addition to the water-based action, there’ll be plenty of on-land entertainment. Major event sponsor, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, will be running a Kombi Rally on Saturday 27 March. The convoy will include classic VW Kombis that will park up at the Coolum event site for people to come and see up-close.
Coolum Flicks in the Park will be running free movie evenings in Fickle Park, including Surf’s Up on Saturday 20 March, and Despicable Me 3 on Saturday 27 March.
Local musicians Dorah Jacson and Sam Yeoward will be providing all of the chilled-out tunes, playing live sets running from 9:00AM to 1:30PM.
There’ll also be market stalls selling a range of products including beach accessories, surf art and jewellery. A VW coffee pod will be serving up the morning’s caffeine.
The 2021 Volkswagen Queensland Surf Festival is proudly supported by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, The Point Coolum Beach, The Sunshine Coast Council, H2Coco, Surfing Life Magazine, Queensland Government, Coolum Business and Tourism, QMS Media and Visit Sunshine Coast.
