SUNSHINE COAST, QUEENSLAND (Tuesday 23 March 2021) – The 2021 Volkswagen Queensland Surf Festival today wrapped up the Masters Shortboard divisions in clean, two-to-three foot surf at Kings Beach, Caloundra.

The event once again changed locations from yesterday in order to find the best conditions available on the wave-abundant Sunshine Coast. Kings Beach delivered some of the best waves the Festival has yet seen.

Trevor Tripcony was the standout of the Masters Shortboard division, taking out the Masters Over 40 Shortboard and the Masters Shortboard Over 35. He also completed the highest two-wave total (14.43) (Grand Masters Over 40) of any finalist.

Tripcony, already a past state champion, will represent Queensland in multiple divisions at the Australian Titles later in the year at Port Macquarie, NSW.

Tripcony said the quality of waves throughout the finals justified the decision to move to Caloundra for the Masters Finals.

“I’m wrapped with my performance. I’m really glad Surfing Queensland ran the competition here at Kings Beach. The waves were good all day and there wasn’t as much paddling as previous days. My arms aren’t hurting like other days.”

Another strong performer was Mick Hassett, who took out the Kahunas Over 45 Shortboard and placed second in the Grand Masters Over 40 Shortboard.

Hassett said he was pleased with his performance in this year’s Festival, especially compared to his results at the 2020 event.

“My second final had lots of good waves so everyone had a fair chance of winning. I’ve done better than last year where I made two finals but finished fourth in both. This year I aimed for top two finishes so I’m very happy.”
