Surfing Queensland is pleased to announce the appointment of Bond University’s Deputy Director of Sport, Luca Liussi, to the role of CEO to drive the future of the organisation and sport in the Sunshine State.
A Queenslander, Luca calls the Gold Coast home, despite a career that has taken him around the globe at the intersection of elite sport, education, and community development for two decades.
His hands on Olympic experience with the men’s and women’s rugby 7s, will be a head start for surfing in the lead up to 2032 Olympic Games here in Queensland.
Luca has led high-performing teams and organisations across sport and education, managing multimillion-dollar programs and building strategic partnerships that deliver impact at both grassroots and elite levels.
He has extensive experience at the top levels of rugby, working with some of the sport’s leading names.
Surfing Queensland chairperson Julian Blanchard said Luca’s background in rugby administration and athlete wellbeing would provide a strong foundation for leadership in Queensland’s surfing community.
“We’re thrilled to welcome Luca to the role of CEO,” Julian said.
“His deep understanding of sport systems, commitment to community, and authentic connection to surf culture make him an ideal leader to guide Surfing Queensland through its next chapter.”
Luca’s leadership style is collaborative, analytical, and grounded in respect for the communities he serves. He is known for his ability to bring people together, align diverse stakeholders, and drive performance with clear, strategic thinking.
His appointment marks a new phase of growth for Surfing Queensland, as the organisation expands its reach and impact through refreshed programs focused on junior pathway development and increasing women’s participation across all levels of the sport.
A passionate surfer and proud Gold Coast local, Luca is also a member of the North End Boardriders Club and an advocate for youth development and wellbeing through sport.
“I’m honoured to lead Surfing Queensland at such an exciting time,” said Luca.
“Surfing is more than a sport—it’s part of the cultural fabric of this state. I look forward to working with the community, our clubs, athletes, and partners to strengthen our programs, support the next generation of surfers, and grow the sport in meaningful, sustainable ways.”
