GOLD COAST, QUEENSLAND (Thursday 1 December, 2022) –  Surfing Queensland unveils the 2023 event schedule with the Gold Coast Open set to kick off the competition schedule, marking the return of professional surfing to Queensland on 17 – 19 February 2023.

After a busy year post-pandemic, there are more than 23 events confirmed to take place across Queensland’s major surfing regions in 2023 with benchmark events including the Gold Coast Open, the Australian Open of Surfing TourQLD State TitlesSurfing Queensland’s Fundraiser Golf Day and the inaugural Oceanside Grom Quest.

The iconic Burleigh Heads will once again play host to Surfing Queensland’s blue ribbon event, the Gold Coast Open.

The 2023 Gold Coast Open will see the Australia / Oceania regional World Surf League (WSL) Qualifying Series (QS) return for a QS1000 rated event, providing one of the first opportunities for competitors to secure points early in the season.

Surfing Queensland Event Manager, Elliot Dempster, said he’s excited for the year ahead and to expect bigger and better things for 2023.

“The Gold Coast Open kicking off the calendar year was a strategic decision by Surfing Queensland as it’s traditionally a great time of waves for our point-breaks,” said Dempster. “Burleigh Heads is one of the best right hand point breaks in the world, so hopefully we can see some of the region’s best compete in world-class waves and provide plenty of entertainment for the spectators.”

Surfing Queensland Chief Executive Officer, Adam Yates, said Surfing Queensland has exciting plans for 2023 and is always looking for ways to improve events, programs and competitor experiences.

“We’re collaborating with state and local government, commercial partners and community stakeholders to deliver a number of new events and Queensland-based initiatives in 2023 to support grassroots surfing in QLD,” said Yates. “Providing more opportunities, education and development pathways remains our top priority moving forward.”
