Congratulations to Surfing Queensland’s newest Life Members, Terry “Tappa” Teece and Ian “Porto” Portingale. Who have both made exceptional contributions to the Queensland surfing community.

Tappa is best known as the voice of Queensland surfing. A legendary commentator, he has brought countless events to life with his signature blend of surf knowledge, storytelling, and charisma. Whether it’s a Queensland junior comp or a major national event, his presence on the mic has become synonymous with surf culture in Queensland.

He has supported junior and grassroots development, been a mentor and advocate for emerging athletes, and consistently championed the surfing community across the state. His commitment has helped elevate the visibility of events and the athletes involved, creating a more connected and vibrant surfing scene.

Porto has been a driving force behind the development of Queensland’s surf school industry, having started with Surfing Queensland back in 1988, when surf coaching consisted of a single summer program at Maroochydore High School.

His first winter surf school had just three students, including his son, and from those modest beginnings, Porto helped grow Surfing Queensland’s programs to reach over 48,000 participants annually.

We proudly celebrate the dedication and impact these two individuals have had on the growth and success of surfing in Queensland.
