The Australian Boardriders Battle QLD qualifier wraps up on the Gold Coast

Published on 03/09/2021

Snapper Rocks Boardriders has taken out the first event of the 2021 Hyundai Australian Boardriders Battle on the Gold Coast.

Australia’s biggest team-surfing event was greeted with smooth, glassy conditions and an ideal two-to-three foot swell at Tallebudgera Beach.

Snapper Rocks Boardriders and last year’s winners, North Shore Boardriders, established themselves as the teams to beat from early on in the event.

Both teams looked strong on paper, with the Snapper Rocks lineup consisting of Joel Parkinson, Kai Tandler, Raya Cambell, Marlon Harrison and Thomas Carvello. The North Shore team included Sophie McCulloch, Alister Reginato, Luke Brumby, Jack Reginato and Shane Bevan.

In an extremely close final which came down to the final wave by each team’s ‘power surfer’, Snapper Rocks narrowly clinched the win with a total point score of 32.77. They were followed by North Shore (32.43), Burleigh Heads (30.16) and Kawana (22.99).

Snapper Rocks surfer Joel Parkinson said the ABB was a fantastic initiative which plays a role in nurturing grass roots talent.

“I’m really proud of Snapper Rocks for the way we surfed for each other. The ABB is a great event that strengthens clubs and provides something a little different for us all to get involved with.”

Snapper Rocks surfer, Raya Campbell, said the exciting finish was a great way to end the day.

“Team events are pretty nerve-wracking. You’re not just surfing for yourself, you’re surfing for all of your friends too. North Shore could have easily snatched the win in the end, so I’m very relieved with how it finished.”

The series now moves on to the Fleurieu Peninsula in South Australia, before heading around the country.
