Snapper Rocks Boardriders have been crowned champions today at the 2022 Hyundai Australian Boardriders Battle (ABB) Queensland qualifier event, held at Duranbah Beach on the Gold Coast in challenging 3ft waves.
The single-day qualifier event showcased 14 of Queensland’s best boardrider clubs as they battled for a position in the Grand Final to be held in February 2023.
The ABB is a distinctive ‘tag team’ team format where clubs must select 2 x Open Men, 1 x Open Woman, 1 x Master (over 35 years) and 1 x Junior (under 18 years) to compete.
Snapper Rocks defeated Burleigh Heads Boardriders, North Shore Boardriders and Noosa Heads Boardriders respectively, in a hotly contested final. All four teams have now qualified to compete at the Grand Final (details TBC).
BurleighHeadsBoardriders started off the final with an early lead, but after all teams progressed through the final with their various surfers, Snapper Rocks Boardridersproved too solid and ran away with the lead.
Snapper Rocks Club President, Jay Phillips, said he couldn’t be more proud of the team and was over the moon to take the win today and qualify for the Grand Final.
“The level of surfing from all the clubs today was just incredible,” said Phillips. “It’s been an epic day and it’s always one of the clubs favourite events on the calendar. Taking the win was just the icing on the cake and I couldn’t be more proud to be the president of this amazing club.”
Today also commenced the Hyundai and Surfing Australia ‘She’s Electric’ national women’s leaderboard.
She’s Electric is a platform to recognise and amplify female grassroots athletes on a national scale by leveraging LiveHeats data from the Australian Boardriders Battles.
