FLAT ROCK, TUGUN, QUEENSLAND (6 October, 2024) – Flat Rock was buzzing with excitement today as 10 individual champions were crowned at the Oceanside GromQuest pres. by The Board Lab. In sunny weather and fun surf conditions, the groms rose to the challenge, battling not only the waves but also the added difficulty of northerly winds.

There were fierce match-ups in the Under 10 parent-assist divisions all the way through to the Under 18 boys and girls divisions. The Under 16 and Under 18 finals also moved into a ‘surfer-on-surfer’ format to provide more professional competition experience for the young surfers.

Standout performers in the youngest divisions were Vada Wessel (U10 Girls) and Luca Dart (U10 Boys), both of whom showcased exceptional skill and dominated the competition over the course of the two-day event.

Top honours in the Under 14 Boys division went to Luca Martin who battled Rayden Fukuda, Ky Clements and Lucas Deffenti in a hotly contested final.

Maddison Kenchington earned her first-ever competition victory in the Under 14 Girls division, grinning from ear to ear as she was chaired up the beach in celebration.

Hemi O’Brien and Kanon Takahashi delivered exceptional performances in the Under 16 divisions, each securing the top spot with impressive displays of textbook surfing.

Saving the best for last, the premier Under 18 Boys and Girls divisions wrapped up the weekend with thrilling performances, where the stakes were high and the competition fierce.

Will Martin clinched victory for the second consecutive year, securing himself yet another Oceanside Electric Bike in a commanding performance.

“I’ve ridden all the new Oceanside electric bikes and I am so excited to be getting one,” Martin said. “It was a great event and I am thrilled to get the win two years in a row! Maybe my younger brother Luca can have my old e-bike as a prize for his win in the Under 14’s…”

12-year-old Leihani Kaloha Zoric competed in the Under 18 Girls and triumphed over Junior World Champion Ziggy Mackenzie, earning herself a brand new Oceanside electric bike with the victory.

“I live on the beach in Byron so being able to check for waves will be a lot easier,” said Zoric. “This is definitely the coolest prize I have won at an event and I am glad I got to be apart of the competition.”
