Southern Cross University Crowned Champions of 2022 National UniSport Surfing Championships

Published on 15/07/2022

After two days of competition, Southern Cross University (SCU) was crowned overall champions of the 2022 Nationals Surfing championships in small but clean waves at Coolum Beach on the Sunshine Coast.

SCU were also crowned Overall Women’s Champions and The University of Queensland won the men’s title. This is the 9th time SCU have been crowned overall champions.

Almost 50 student-athletes from across Australia participated in the championships at Coolum Beach on the Sunshine Coast.

UniSport Australia General Manager – National Sport Program, Natalie Broom, was pleased to see students travel across the country to compete at the glorious Coolum Beach on the Sunshine Coast.

“While the field was smaller than anticipated, there was a high standard of competition in the surf and a positive experience for all involved. We hope we can continue to build this event now things are returning to normal after two challenging years,” said Broom.

Australian Catholic University won the Team’s Challenge event to finish off a successful championship for all involved.

Surfing Queensland Event Manager, Elliot Dempster highlighted what a great event it has been. “The event has been great to see all of the University surfers having fun and supporting each other.”

“The conditions have been small and somewhat challenging for the competitors but nevertheless, everyone seems to be having a great time and enjoying the waves and beautiful weather Coolum has on offer,” said Dempster.
