SurfSUP Cairns: Come and Try!

Published on 01/07/2022

CAIRNS, QUEENSLAND (Friday 1 July) – Surfing Queensland’s latest stand-up-paddle (SUP) program is set to kick off on Friday 8 July at Ellis Beach in Cairns with the aim to engage kids aged 8-16 to improve their overall health and wellbeing, while learning the basic skills of the sport.

Surfing Queensland CEO Adam Yates said over the past years, SUPing has experienced a huge surge in popularity, which is why they’re implementing the ‘Come & Try’ sessions across the coast.

“SUP’ing is the world’s fastest growing water sport and we’ve seen a huge spike in popularity the past years and it’s fantastic to see the sport take off throughout Queensland,” said Yates. “The Come & Try sessions are designed for kids to grow their confidence in the water, improve and develop motor skills, balance, strength and overall physical and mental health.”

What’SUP Cairns will be activating their first ‘Come & Try’ session on Friday 8 July & Saturday 9 July at Ellis Beach and Lake Tinaroo.

What’SUP Cairns owner and operator, Allie Chadburn, said the program is a fantastic initiative for the region as SUPing has many benefits.

“One of the several benefits of the sport and the SurfSUP program is the improvement in mental health from disconnecting with technology, being in nature surrounded by water and fresh air,” said Chadburn. “This program is valuable for local kids to get involved with as it significantly improves confidence in all facets, as they learn new skills, improve their overall health and wellbeing, while having fun.”

The Come & Try Session is $10 per participant and involves warm up activities and games, ocean/water safety, and introductory SUP skills on land and in the water.

The SurfSUP Program is developed by Surfing Queensland and Queensland Government’s Active Industry Project Fund.

The SurfSUP ‘Come & Try’ program will also be activating at Port Douglas on Sunday 10 July.
