Seven individual champions have been crowned at the Gold Coast leg of the 2021 Woolworths Surfer Grom Comps Series, which was held in peaky 2ft waves.

After an early start at the ever reliable Spit, competitors were welcomed with great 2 foot swell which continued throughout the day.

Charli Hately

The Under 12 Girls Division was won by Pipi Taylor (PEREGIAN BEACH) with a combined two wave score of 13.50 (out of a possible 20.00). She beat MillerMay Berg (MIAMI) (8.70), Evie Wilson (DOONAN) (6.33) and Amelia Johnston (MARCUS BEACH) (5.24).

The Under 12 Boys Division was taken out by Jairah Smith (WARANA) (11.57), defeating Zac Johnston (CURRIMUNDI) (8.00), Hemi Obrien (PALM BEACH) (7.87), and Harrison Gibbs (GOLDEN BEACH) (6.74).

Hunter Andersson

The Under 14 Girls Division was won by Charli Hately (CURRUMBIN) (12.13). She beat Stella Green (BUDDINA) (11.76), Meika Locke (PALM BEACH) (9.07), and Pipi Taylor (PEREGIAN BEACH) (9.03).

“I felt like I was surfing poorly until the end of the heat, and then go into my stride,” Hately said. “It was such a fun heat with all the girls, they surfed so well.”

In a very close fought final in the Under 14 Boys Division, Hunter Andersson (MOFFAT BEACH) took the honours with a 14.17 heat total. He overcame Caden Francis (GOLD COAST) (13.24), Mitchell Peterson (NOOSA) (12.77), and Jesse Ferguson (SUNSHINE BEACH) (10.10).

“It was a tough final, everyone got really good waves, but I was still fired up after having to dig deep to qualify through the repechage round on Day One of the event,” Andersson said.

The Woolworths Fresh Wave Awards went to Kauri Heuston Connor and Lucas Deffenti for their outstanding sportsmanship shown during the event, with Navah Holmes and Jaggar Parsons winning the Pic’s Peanut Butter Star Performer Awards for showing their future elite surfing abilities.

The Groms will now focus their sights on the second and final event of the QLD series to be held on the Sunshine Coast on the 11-12 December
