A day full of foamies, froth and non-stop fun at the Red Bull Foam Wreckers, Burleigh Heads!

Published on 02/03/2022

The Red Bull Foam Wreckers was the first-of-its-kind event to be held on the Gold Coast, with traditional surf contest rules out the window. The event was an ‘anti-surf contest’ which was held at Burleigh Beach on Saturday 19 February 2022. Surfers were required to ride a MF Softboard (foamie), designated to them by the ‘Wheel of Chance’. Anyone could compete in this event, with waves judged on creativity, style, and who was having the most fun!

Former CT surfer, Matt Wilkinson

The day attracted 128 competitors, including former Championship Tour (CT) surfers and some of Australia’s best including Mick Fanning, Julian Wilson, Josh Kerr, Sierra Kerr, Dimity Stoyle, Alex Hayes and Kehu Butler.

Former CT surfer, Matt Wilkinson took the crown as winner of the Red Bull Foam Wreckers. Runner up was Matthew Pierce, and third place went to Dominic Reisch.

I ride foam boards a lot at home, so I do love surfing on them,” said Wilkinson. “This format is really cool, letting the wheel choose which board you ride and changing up how you surf each heat is a lot of fun.” It had been a while since Matt was on the podium. “Feels good to be back on the podium…I’m back!” laughed Wilkinson.

The Expression Session was especially stacked with talent, with 3X World Champion, Mick Fanning taking the win over former CT surfers Julian Wilson, and Josh Kerr.

Surfing Queensland is looking forward to welcoming the Red Bull Foam Wreckers back to the Gold Coast in 2023 for another day of fun!
